Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ACT and SAT scores?

The ACT is scored on a scale of 1–36; the SAT is scored on a scale of 400–1600. The two tests measure similar skills but in different ways, and all U.S. colleges accept either score. Because the scales are different, you can't compare them directly — that's what concordance tables are for.

How accurate is the ACT to SAT conversion?

The conversion is based on the official 2018 concordance study conducted jointly by ACT, Inc. and the College Board, using data from hundreds of thousands of students who took both tests. It shows statistically comparable scores, not a guarantee of how you'd perform on the other test — but it's the same data colleges use when comparing applicants.

Does the conversion work for the digital SAT?

Yes. The digital SAT (introduced for U.S. students in 2024) uses the same 400–1600 scoring scale as the paper SAT, so the concordance tables apply equally to both versions.

What is a good ACT or SAT score?

The national average ACT composite for the class of 2024 was 19.4 (roughly the 53rd percentile). A score of 24 ACT / 1160 SAT puts you in approximately the 81st percentile — above the average for most four-year universities. What counts as "good" depends on your target schools; check each college's middle 50% score range for admitted students.

How many points could I realistically improve?

Students who complete a structured prep course typically gain 3–5 points on the ACT. Even a 3-point gain can move you up 10–15 percentile points in the middle of the score range, where the scale is most competitive. OnToCollege's ACT and SAT prep courses are designed specifically to maximize score improvement for students.
